Newtown Boro – Newtown Township Joint Traffic Committee


Mission Statement

Newtown’s Joint Traffic Committee is a collaborative effort to address transportation management and safety issues of common interest to Newtown Borough and Newtown Township. The committee will work to promote and improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety, and explore multi-modal transportation options, primarily along our shared boundaries. Committee membership includes 3 representatives each from the Newtown Boro Traffic Committee and the Newtown Township Traffic Committee.

Committee Long-term Goals:

  • Promote traffic enforcement and pedestrian safety throughout Newtown.
  • Address circulation and safety issues in the State St./Sycamore St. commercial district and other joint corridors.
  • Improve pedestrian and bike links between and within the Township and Borough.
  • Promote the use of traffic calming devices where appropriate.
  • Coordinate with Borough and Township Planning Commissions regarding traffic and safety issues.
  • Improve community awareness and involvement through education and outreach.

Action Items for 2011:

  • Conduct 2 Pedestrian Safety Weeks in Spring and Fall 2011.
  • Work with Police and Courts to identify opportunities for stronger enforcement
  • Strengthen our relationships with Borough Council and Township Board of Supervisors
  • Build the Traffic Committee to full membership (Township only)
  • Strengthen relationships with Township and Boro Planning Commissions
    • Maintain awareness of all proposed and approved development projects and identify potential traffic and pedestrian safety issues
    • Assign liaisons to Planning Commissions
    • Review all Traffic Impact Studies
  • Become knowledgeable about pedestrian and bike links between the Township and Borough. Access information on best practices.
  • Seek greater input from the community
    • Request email addresses from Township and Boro - publish on websites
    • Add this document to Committee information on websites
    • Communicate with Township Homeowners’ Associations
    • Request that a Traffic Tip be added to Township’s quarterly newsletter
    • Consider an annual open forum
    • Consider participation in the Newtown Auto Show
    • Provide information at BOS and Council meetings during public comment
  • Identify potential grant money sources to support recommendations for improvement
  • Create a connection with the Council Rock School Board
    • Involve schools in Pedestrian Safety Weeks
    • Promote participation in “International Walk to School” day.
  • Begin SMART Transportation study (Boro only)
